Books From A to Z – The Bank Manager And The Bum

The Bank Manager and the Bum by Darren Sant

When branch manager Giles Macintosh arrives to open up one morning and finds an injured bum and his battered dog lying in the doorway of the bank, he little suspects what lies in store for them all.

Giles does the decent thing and calls for help, then puts the incident out of his mind. However, having been witness to things he cannot explain, he feels drawn to the man and tries to track him down … only to find he has vanished.

But who is the enigmatic, homeless Frank? Why are two very nasty men trying to find him? Why has a prostitute been abducted? And what does the future hold for Giles’s seriously ill son, Jake?

Darren Sant skilfully weaves the various strands to create a compelling story that is as unflinching as it is heart-warming.

As the story unfolds, the tension increases and the true nature of Frank’s amazing secret begins to be revealed. The stakes are high as the criminal and the supernatural come together for a final, inevitable showdown. (via Goodreads)

My views: The Bank Manager and The Bum

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which is a mix of supernatural and mundane. Set in the recent past, against the backdrop of globilsation,  the author has skillfully woven together various strands to construct a very moving story. Both Giles and Frank, one a bank manager and the other a bum, are essentially decent human beings trying to do what they believe is right by their respective families.  If the supernatural is of interest to you,  this book is definitely worth reading

  1. THis sounds interesting, especially with the supernatural element added to it. The story sounds nicely woven, too. Another one to add to my ‘To read list’ 🙂
I’m amazed at the way you select the books. Every book is new to me, and I feel happy to get this info from you 🙂

    • Small doses of supernatural certainly spice up a book. In any case, I do believe that some people do have a ‘gift’. I am sure that you will enjoy this book, as much as I did.

  2. I would have liked to read this book, but the supernatural element is not my cup of tea, so I’ll give it a miss.

  3. Again a new one for me! Both characters seem fun and intriguing! I think I’ll pick this one up just for the ‘bum’ 😉

  4. This goes straight to my ‘To read’ list 🙂 Thanks for sharing this and doing a gr8 job at it!

  5. Supernatural definitely interests me and this seems like an engrossing read.

  6. Supernatural..not much of my type.. but reading you and your opinions are always a pleasure

  7. Thanks for visiting. As one of the other readers commented, supernatural is not everyone’s cup of tea.

  8. I liked the way the review has been done. Though I like fast paced gripping storyline, am not that much into supernatural genres with books. It was a lovely read though :-).

  9. Supernatural is a must for me! This does look interesting I am afraid it might be slightly racy for me as well..

  10. I may take a pass on this book. Although it sounds like you enjoyed it, it isn’t really my preferred type pf story. I’m marking it down for a couple of my friends for whom this would be an instant hit given their choice of reading material. Thanks for the review.

  11. Supernatural mystery….seems like an interesting read. Will definitely try it.
    Happy blogging.

  12. This looks very interesting. The backdrop of globalization and something otherworldly – that should be an interesting combination!

  13. Supernatural :O I was watching Insidious and felt that if I could read it as a book it would be more interesting. I have never read horror genre (goosebumps are excluded). I think I will start with this!

    • If you are looking for something horrifying, I believe you will be disappointed. Its a lot more straight forward stuff that is plausible, if you believe in the supernatural.

  14. I like mysteries, of all kinds, so this is going on my list. Why the three stars though? Something you didn’t like about the book?

    • Not really a mystery, much more straightforward stuff. I am conservative in rating books. So three stars is a pretty high score, given that I have yet to award five stars.

  15. the story sounds very interesting. Nice review

  16. Super natural… thou difficult to digest at times…. it adds spice to a book/movie. I am gonna read this! 🙂

  17. Supernatural is a genre which I like……
    Nice review

  18. I love Anything supernatural and this book goes to my reading list nw 🙂 Thanks for sharing 🙂

  19. Ok, I’m adding this to my growing list of ‘to-read’ books! You make it sound so intriguing and I like a bit of the supernatural thrown in :). I also wrote about books today, just a different kind LOL: The Five Dog Blog

    • If you like a bit of the supernatural, I am sure that you will enjoy this book as much as I did. And I must check out the books on dog training since we have a boxer who could do with some additional training.

  20. Ooh I like that …. The supernatural is super interesting. I’m lagging so desperately in my reading yet am tempted to order this one.

  21. Sulekha says:

Supernatural and criminal together, sounds ominous 🙂 I have yet to read such books, great review…

  22. Stopping by on the A to Z Challenge … I like how different your first two books are, and how you review them. They both sound rather fun.

  23. It’s not my type of book. I will come back to see more books which can go into my reading list.

  24. I like that combination! Sounds like fun! 🙂 *Busy adding to my list of to-reads*

    🙂 Thank you!

  25. That’s a nice roundup of the book, Jose. But supernatural…not my type I guess 😛

  26. I turned my head to absorb more of this scent and my tail rose up in anticipation…would have been my reaction if i was a dog after reading “showdown with the supernatural” #Justsaying 🙂

  27. I like the supernatural in a book, so I’m not quite sure why the book is not gelling with me. Good roundup of the book though, thanks.
