Book Description
In this sequel to The Bargain, Betsie Troyer is back home in her Amish community where she knows she belongs, free from the confusing Englisher way of life. She and Charley Yoder have made promises to each other, and her life is back on track—until Gerald Sullivan shows up with his young daughter, asking for Betsie’s help. He’s on his way to find his estranged wife, and begs Betsie to take young Sheila in.

When she agrees, Betsie’s carefully planned life is shaken up again. Sheila’s newfound faith is troubling to Charley—and his attraction to another girl is beginning to be a problem. But how can Betsie confront him when she is still trying to confront her own feelings about Sheila’s brother, Michael? Keeping the peace between the Amish man she’s always loved, a twelve-year-old Englisher girl, and a draft-dodging hippie is more than she ever thought she’d have to deal with in her simple, orderly life. Still, Betsie is convinced she can keep things from falling apart completely.

Then during her best friend’s wedding, tragedy strikes and her world is upended. She has to make a decision: does she love Charley or Michael . . . or is she craving a deeper love that only God can give?

The compelling second novel of the Plain City Peace series, The Bachelor deftly weaves together the strands of a solid, simpler time with the turmoil of an era of change, revealing the strengths of both in its powerful narrative.

Home to Chicory Lane: A Chicory Inn

Landyn longs for home, but her mother may have other plans.

Audrey Whitman’s dreams are coming true. Now that their five kids are grown, she and her husband, Grant, are turning their beloved family home into a cozy bed and breakfast just a mile outside of Langhorne, Missouri.

Opening weekend makes Audrey anxious, with family and friends coming from all over to help celebrate the occasion. But when Audrey’s daughter, Landyn, arrives, the U-Haul she’s pulling makes it clear she’s not just here for a few days. Audrey immediately has questions. What happened in New York that sent Landyn running home? Where was Landyn’s husband, Chase? And what else was her daughter not telling her? One thing was for sure, the Chicory Inn was off to a rocky start. Can Audrey still realize her dream and at the same time provide the comfort of home her daughter so desperately needs?

Deborah Raney‘s books have won numerous awards, including the RITA, National Readers Choice Award, HOLT Medallion, and the Carol Award, and have twice been Christy Award finalists. She and her husband, Ken, recently traded small-town life in Kansas—the setting of many of Deborah’s novels—for life in the (relatively) big city of Wichita, where they enjoy gardening, antiquing, movies, and traveling to visit four children and a growing brood of grandchildren who all live much too far away.

My views:

I was attracted to the lovely cover of this book and couldn’t wait to read it.

I had mixed feelings while reading the book, wanting several times to bang Landyn and Chase’s heads together to make them see sense.  It was only after I had finished the book that I realized that it was because the author has created real characters, with real problems that made me feel that way.  Loved the big family interactions, as they brought back memories of my own large extended family. I can see this being the start of a great series.

I received a copy of the book from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review.

Seagrass Pier (The Hope Beach Series)

Elin Summerall was one of the lucky ones. Not only did she get a heart transplant, but the donor was a perfect fit. A miraculously perfect fit.

But when Elin begins having violent flashbacks—and vivid dreams of being strangled—she realizes that she has been the recipient of more than just a new heart . . . Elin is remembering her donor’s murder.

Her strange affliction has attracted some unwanted attention: from the press, from the authorities . . . and from the killer himself. Now, living alone with her young daughter and aging mother, Elin is being stalked—by a man she’s only met in her nightmares.
The police are dubious of her story, but one off-duty FBI agent is eager to help her: Agent Marc Everton, the father of Elin’s daughter.

Of course, he doesn’t know about that. Yet.

Now, in a remote cottage on Hope Island, Elin and Marc must probe the secrets buried in her borrowed heart. And there’s no time to waste. One man is desperate to silence her—before she remembers too much.

My views:

This is the first time I’ve heard of cell memory – where the recipient of an organ seems to recall and dream about things that happened to the donor. In this sorry Elin recalls things about the violent death of the donor of her heart. It’s interesting that the author has Elin’s mother suffering from dementia and losing her memory as Elin struggles as she recalls the memories of another person.

As Elin faces her widowhood, her mother’s illness, and her own confusion, she manages to also to be a single Mom to her little girl. The reader is filled with respect for Elin’s character.

Then there’s the character of Marc – who tries to work past his anger at Elin for denying him the knowledge that he is the father of her child. However, his anger doesn’t prevent him from taking on the responsibility for Elin’s safety and being involved in the life of their daughter.

The characterization is really well done. And there’s the underlying Christian theme of finding our identity in Love. As Elin struggles to come to terms with who she really is, her mother’s wisdom despite the dementia shines through:

It’s how we love, honey. And you love with your whole heart. God shines through you. Don’t ever let that change.”

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and the suspense sprinkled with romance and wisdom!

I’ll be looking out for more of Colleen Coble’s books.

Meant To Be Mine

meant to be mine

Title: Meant to Be Mine
Author: Becky Wade
Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Bethany House
Release date: May, 2014
ISBN: 9780764211089

Ty Porter has always been irresistible to Celia Park. All through high school–irresistible. When their paths cross again after college–still irresistible. This time, though, Ty seems to feel exactly the same way about Celia. Their whirlwind romance deposits them at a street-corner Las Vegas wedding chapel.

The next morning they wake to a marriage certificate and a dose of cold reality. Celia’s ready to be Ty’s wife, but Ty’s not ready to be her husband. He’s a professional bull rider, he lives on the road, and he’s long planned to settle down with the hometown girl he’s known since childhood.

Five and a half years pass. Celia’s buried her dreams so that she can afford to raise her daughter, Addie. Ty’s achieved all of his goals. Or thought he had, until he looks again into the eyes of the woman he couldn’t forget and into the face of the child he never knew he had.

How much will Ty sacrifice to win back Celia’s trust and prove to her that their spontaneous marriage can still become the love of a lifetime?

My views:

Meant To Be Mine would have been just another ‘secret baby’ plot, but for Becky Wade turning this into a rather moving story of ordinary people struggling with their dreams and hopes, and trying to work out a relationship with each other despite all the hurt of the past.

For quite a while I found Ty’s character to be rather shallow, until I delved deeper and realized that the author had cleverly created a somewhat different hero – warts and all – struggling to find a way to forgive himself and to be worthy of Celia and Addie.

Celia’s reluctance to forgive and trust him and to reach for her own dreams is also fascinating. She sometimes uses her love for her daughter as a crutch – not letting go, not moving forward.

How this couple attempt to work out their relationship and move past their unresolved history and with the help of God, learn trust and forgiveness, makes the story very  believable and heartwarming.
